Coastal families in All-Lights Village in Cebu, Philippines receive boats to enhance livelihood, self-reliance

Sixty families from coastal communities in Kinatarcan Island in Santa Fe, Cebu, Philippines received motorized fishing boats at the launching of All-Lights Village Kinatarcan Island Fisherfolks Association (AVKIFA) on April 9, 2016. Another 20 families shall receive their boats once production has been completed this month.

Kinatarcan Island is composed of three big barangays (Kinatarcan, Langub, and Hagdan) adopted by GPF Philippines' community development program- the All-Lights Village. Prior to the turnover, some fishermen will have to borrow boats from their neighbors. The turnover of boats aims to address livelihood concerns as one of the development component of All-Lights Village Project towards self-reliance and community resilience with a common vision.

This project was made possible through the Global Grant funded by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, Rotary Clubs of Makati EDSA (District 3830, Philippines), Workington (UK), Workington Derwent (UK), Furness (UK), and Rotary Districts 1190 (UK) and 3620 (Korea). Aside from the fishing boats, the families also received fishing nets and solar lanterns. Municipal Mayor of Sante Fe, Cebu, Hon. Jose Esgana, representing the partners in the local government, expressed his gratitude and commitment in supporting the initiative.

AVKIFA is recently accredited by the Department of Labor and Employment as a bonafide association. The members were organized and capacitated by GPF Philippines in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Santa Fe; Provincial Government of Cebu; Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Region 7); Department of Environment and Natural Resources (Region 7); and, Department of Labor and Employment (Region 7).
