On September 21st, the International Day of Peace is observed around the world, devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and people. Wherever we are — at work, school, or especially at home — we have the power to contribute to a world of peace.
Here are three ways we can advance the ideal of peace and strengthen our bond as a community and global family:
- Invest in a Unifying Vision
Basic human values—respect and compassion for all people, honoring the family, living with integrity—are vitally important to people of all faiths and backgrounds. In faith communities, men and women have a shared responsibility to bridge divisions, resolve conflicts and build ethical societies based on a common vision and shared aspirations, principles and values.
Each of us can take a step towards peace by emphasizing our shared values, working together to transcend differences, resolve identity-based conflict and build sustainable peace based on recognition that all people are members of One Family Under God.
- Start in your family
Both men and women are essential in the goal of creating families with future generations that respect themselves and others as people born with the same innate value to contribute to our community, nation, and world. Women and men have distinct physiological and intuitive qualities that are different but complementary to each other. These aspects should be proudly cherished and respected, equally valued in their contribution towards a healthy family.
If we can challenge ourselves to become better people within our families, in treating each other with love and respect, we can carry that character into our relationships in the greater community, contributing in small and great ways to peace.
- Break down barriers through service
International and intercultural service inspires and empowers us to develop empathy for the less fortunate and to explore innovative approaches to meeting economic and environmental challenges. As families and communities, we should foster a culture of altruism and inclusiveness transcending religion, race, and nationality, and tapping into the potential of every generation.
Peace may seem like a far off ideal, but it starts close to home and every single one of us has the power to lead our generation on the path to peace.
What will you do to contribute a world of peace?
